So Phil Zimmerman, the creator of PGP, has created a new product/company called Silent Circle. Speaking about the $20/month cost he said:
"I'm not going to apologize for the cost," Zimmermann told CNET, adding that the final price has not been set. "This is not Facebook. Our customers are customers. They're not products. They're not part of the inventory." via CNET News
I love this attitude and that he called this out. How many people realize that Facebook, Google, etc are not truly "free"? By using these sites, you make yourself the product - their customers are the advertisers and their goal is to make you give them more and more information about yourself over time so they can sell ads. In some cases that's fine, but just realize that in most cases, if it's free, you're not really the customer.
